Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Two accused in the case for killing of elderly lawyer Shamsul Islam Chowdhury were sent to jail yesterday after their 5-day remand. Police, however, did not give details of the quizzing of victim's daughter in-law Zabeda Khanam and Ismail Hossain. Earlier, two other accused--Burhan Uddin and Ansar Ali--gave confessional statement before the Judicial magistrate court on Sunday. However, police are yet to arrest the other accused Zaher Ali and alleged killer and victim's son Mashhud Chowdhury Munna. Police said microbus driver Burhan and Ansar Ali confessed to helping Munna carrying the body to Sunamganj for dumping it into the Surma River. Munna hit in his father's head with a boulder before pushing injection into his body in a bid to kill the elderly man, Burhan and Ansar said in their statements. On Saturday afternoon, Sylhet police recovered parts of the skeleton of the victim. Besides, they recovered his panjabi, gamchha and tupi from the Surma riverbed. Officer in-charge of Sylhet Kotwali PS Khondaker Nawroz Ahmed said those were recovered from the places shown by accused Burhan and Ansar Ali. The remains were sent to the morgue for post mortem, he added. Rab on 19 August arrested driver Burhan and three others in connection with the murder while the victim's youngest son Mashhud Chowdhury alias Munna allegedly fled to Meghalaya in India through Tekerghat. On arrest, Munna's wife Zaheda Khanam and others narrated the killing by Munna. Police also recovered the microbus, syringe, gamchha and other things used for the killing of the lawyer. Victim's elder son Mahmud Chowdhury filed a case with Sylhet Kotwali PS on 4 August, days after the lawyer went 'missing'. In the case, he suspected that his younger brother and his wife had a hand in the case of 'missing' of Shamsul Islam Chowdhury,90, as their relation had soured over property-related issues.
