Star National Desk
Several hundred people yesterday besieged Sundarganj upazila parished office in Gaibandha protesting alleged corruption in Test Relief (TR), Vulnerable Group development (VGD), and Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programmes. They also took out a procession at the upazila headquarters and then held a rally in front of the office, reports our correspondent. Addressing the rally, the speakers alleged that union parishad chairmen in the upazila made false lists, depriving several thousands ultra-poor people of government assistance. They alleged that the UP chairmen in collaboration with the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO0 and project implementation officer (PIO) are misappropriating government money allocated for the ultra-poor people. The speakers urged the government to investigate the matter and take necessary actions against the persons involved in this corrupt practice. They also demanded immediate removal of the UNO and PIO. The agitated people later submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of Gaibandha demanding punishment of the UP chairmen and the government officials involved in misappropriation of government money allocated for the ultra-poor people. In Pabna, the ultra-poor people of Goyeshpur union in Sadar upazila and Demra union in Faridpur upazila will finally get Eid aid under special VGF programme. Our correspondent reported that district relief and rehabilitation department yesterday issued delivery letters on the lists of two unions. Chairmen of both unions said they will start distribution of rice among the poor under special VGF programme today. The government has allocated 10kg of rice to each of the ultra-poor people under special VGF programme on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr across the country. Earlier, the delivery letters on the lists of two unions prepared by the respective unions were not issued by the upazila administration due to objection by the ruling party men who demanded half of the VGF cards.
