Two police officials were assaulted as they tried to save alleged kidnappers from angry mob in Sadar upazila on Friday. Local sources said Ekramul Islam Kabiraj, 27, rod and cement trader at Chakauli Bazar in Manda upazila, was returning to his house from shop at 3:00pm on Friday. A gang coming on a microbus kidnapped him at gun point at Katherdanga. Within a few minutes, local people stopped the microbus by putting up road barricade at Katkher Bazar crossing. They caught four of the alleged kidnappers while three others managed to escape. Locals then gave them a good beating. When the kidnappers took shelter at a tailoring shop, the mob locked the shop. They also set ablaze the microbus used by the culprits. On information, a team from Manda and Sadar police stations went to the spot to 'rescue' the kidnappers. It triggered a clash between angry people and the law enforcers, leaving Sadar Model police station OC Ali Ahmed Hasmi and ASP of Sadar Circle Mahfuz Afzal injured. The situation returned to normalcy when the local high police officials agreed to hand over the kidnappers to Rab as per the demand of the local people. Local people again hurled brickbats on Rab as a team of Rab-5 tried to 'rescue' the alleged kidnappers at about 8:30pm. At that time, Rab and riot police dispersed the mob by charging baton and firing several shots in the air. The arrestees were identified as microbus driver Jony Chandra Sarker, Abdur Razzak, Abdul Hanif and Zakirul Islam. They are residents of different villages of Sadar upazila.
