Restrict cars in city

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday demanded a restriction on the number of private cars and an increase in the number of public buses to ease traffic congestion in the capital city. The speakers at the roundtable jointly organised by Save The Environment Movement (SEM) and WBB Trust also suggested for creation of scope for walking, cycling and plying rickshaws. They pointed out that good quality buses could play a significant role in bringing down traffic congestion. The speakers suggested a total reformation of the BRTC and introduction of more BRTC buses on all routes gradually. Chairman of SEM Abu Naser Khan presided over the roundtable where speakers also demanded that rickshaws be re-introduced on the roads they have been banned from considering people's sufferings. Other suggestions put forward at the roundtable include offering lease to private bus operators of entire routes so that they can run sufficient number of buses to meet demand. They also suggested for stern action including cancellation of route permits if rules are violated. The speakers suggested preparation of coordinated guideline to improve the transport management and also for giving priority to rail communication. Among others, lawmaker Muzibul Haque Chunnu, president of Institute of Planners Prof Sarowar Jahan, prominent columnist Kamal Lohani, president of CPB Manzurul Ahsan Khan, journalist Manzurul Haque, former director of BIWTA Monowar Hossain and Khondokar Niyaz Rahman of UNDP addressed the roundtable.
