TV delivered on multiscreen

Forget everything you know about television, as the viewing experience is about to change and will not be limited to the box or the slim and slender LCD and LED TVs only. Ericsson, world's leading provider of technology and services to telecom operators, demonstrated how television experience could be delivered across multiple platforms to multiple devices. At the recently held CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore, the largest technology showcase in Asia, the leader in 2G, 3G and 4G mobile technologies, demonstrated End to Endless (E2E) TV systems, the company's new vision and mission which can enable operators to differentiate their TV services and exploit interactivity to provide a more compelling user interface. At a media briefing on June 22, Ericsson officials mentioned a range of systems for end-to-end content acquisition and management for a number of applications including Xport Time-Shifted Television (TSTV) and Watch Point Content Management System (CMS). Simon Frost, head of communications and portfolio marketing, Solution Area TV, Ericsson, mentioned that by 2015, 90 per cent of all network traffic will be video and 60 per cent of which will be internet video. During his presentation he also showed Ericsson's thought leadership in consumer experiences with the award winning IPTV remote, a companion screen in the home to search, browse, consume and control content and experiences as part of the Connected Home, and enable social interaction with others. It was mentioned how E2E solutions are helping service providers in Asia turn complexity into profitability and enabling them to differentiate their TV services to deliver the ultimate user experience in an interactive multiscreen world. "We are witnessing rapid infrastructure changes in the Asia Pacific market as consumer desire throughout the region shapes today's television into an 'anytime, anywhere' experience. New devices and consumer behavior is driving up video traffic and putting increased bandwidth pressures on networks," said Staffan Pehrson, vice president and Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson in a news release. "Digital penetration in the APAC region is set to rise dramatically over the next five years, which presents a number of challenges to operators; not only in the acquisition and processing of high quality content but also in the management and efficient delivery of large volumes of video, media and audio across multiple platforms to multiple devices. Ericsson's expertise in delivering next generation TV solutions to customers in the Asia Pacific market is invaluable as we enable them to bring the desired Individual TV Experience to consumers." There were also two major new encoding solutions on show. Ericsson's Voyager II, a digital satellite news gathering (DSNG) product to unleash the power of MPEG-4 AVC 4:2:2 encoding with 10-bit precision at up to 1080p50/60 resolutions, and Ericsson's Multi-format Contribution Encoder (CE), the most flexible and future proof platform of its kind. There were also demonstrations of Ericsson's delivery of full-resolution 3-D content and the RX8200 Advanced Modular Receiver, the world's first integrated receiver decoder (IRD) providing broadcast quality HD to SD downconversion to reduce distribution costs for operators.
