Three to die, 11 get life for murders

Three people were sentenced to death while 11 others to life term imprisonment in separate murder cases in Chandpur, Bagerhat, Munshiganj, Sylhet and Khulna districts on Monday and the day before. A special tribunal in Chandpur on Monday sentenced two people to death in the sensational Shefali rape and murder case in 1999, reports our correspondent. The convicts are Abul Kalam, son of Shahed Ali Matbor and Shah Alam, son of Fazlu Matbor. Both hailed from Ishanbala village under Haimchar upazila of the district. According to the case, on July 22, 1999, the aforesaid two abducted Shefali Akter, 20, and took her to nearby Ishanbala Char, where they gangraped, killed her and later dumped the body in a bush. In Bagerhat, a court yesterday awarded death penalty to Ilias Sheikh for killing his brother in 1999, reports our correspondent. According to the case statement, on March 23, 1999, Ilias Sheikh, son of Asmot Ali Sheikh of Chandipur village under Morelganj upazila beat dead his younger brother Sheikh Oliur Rahman centering a previous feud over a disputed land. However, Ilias Sheikh went into hiding soon after the incident. Our Munshiganj Correspondent adds: Dalim Mia, 33, was sentenced to life term imprisonment on Monday for killing his wife Nurjahan, 23, for dowry in 2006. According to the case, Dalim Mia strangled his wife and later dumped her body under sands in his house in Kundulia village under Sirajdikhan upazila on November11, 2006. In Sylhet, nine people were sentenced to life term imprisonment on Sunday for killing a man in 2005, reports UNB. The convicts are Aftab Uddin, son of Mokaddas Ali, Dulal, son of Fazir Ali, Samuj Ali, son of Anwar Ali, Sarif Uddin, son of Ambor Ali of Gongapur village, Anwar Majhi, son of Firoz Ali of Lama Gangapur village, Ruhul Amin, son of Nasim Uddin, Shamsul, son of Motiar Rahman and Emdad Uddin, son of Joyen Uddin of Pitaitikor village in Fenchuganj upazila and Yusuf Ali, son of Yakub Ali of Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar district. According to the prosecution, Anwar Majhi and his associates killed Mokhlesur Rahman, son of Montaj Ali of Lama Gangapur village and looted Tk 1.11 lakh when he was returning home on the night of 19 February, 2005. A court in Khulna on Sunday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment in absentia for killing his mother. The court also fined Abdul Gaffar Sheikh, 35, of Fulbari village in Botiaghata upazila Tk 10,000. According to the prosecution, Gaffar, following a family feud, attacked his mother Hazera Begum and hit her with a sharp weapon on November 30, 2000, leaving her dead on the spot.
