Thakurgaon hospital docs, nurses agitate

Doctors and nurses of Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital observed one-hour work abstention on Friday and Saturday demanding arrest of the culprits who assaulted a doctor and two nurses early Thursday. Acting civil surgeon Dr Abu Mohammad Khairul Kabir said, a group of agitated people assaulted an on-duty doctor and two nurses following death of a patient early Thursday at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital. They also vandalised some windows and furniture of the hospital. Khairul Kabir said, Md Isha,50, of Muslimnagar village in Thakurgaon municipality area was admitted to the hospital with asthmatic complication on Wednesday at 6:30pm. On the same night, when his condition deteriorated, duty doctor Feroz Zaman referred him to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital at 9:45pm. At that time, ambulance of the hospital was not available. So, the doctors with the help of acting civil surgeon managed another ambulance from a maternity centre and sent the patient to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital at about 10:15pm. The patient's attendants asked duty doctor Feroz Zaman to go to Rangpur with the patient. But Dr Feroz said that without permission of the higher authorities he can't leave the hospital. The patient died on way to Rangpur hospital at about 12:15am. Hearing the news, agitated relatives of the patient along with some local people came to the hospital and assaulted Feroz Zaman and two nurses at about 12:30pm. They also vandalised the hospital's windows and furniture.
