Unb, Chuadanga
Two alleged members of an inter-district smuggling gang were arrested along with about 21 tolas of gold ornaments at Hizolgari Bazaar in Sadar upazila yesterday. The arrestees are Zahidul Islam, 30, and Nasir Uddin, 26. Both are residents of Darshana Puratan Para in Damurhuda upazila of the district. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided Hizolgari Bazaar early yesterday when two alleged smugglers, who were travelling on a motorbike, tried to flee the scene sensing presence of law enforcers. Police caught Zahidul Islam from a sugarcane field of Carew and Company after chasing about 200 yards. Later, the gold ornaments were recovered from his possession. Local police officials rushed to the spot and quizzed the arrestees. Police said the two illegally brought the gold ornaments from India and were taking those to Jhenidah. Assistant police superintendent ASM Nazmul Haque said that a quarter is engaged in gold smuggling. It would be possible to nab rest of the members following the confession of the arrestees, he said.
