Death of two kids in road mishaps sparks protest

Death of two children in road accidents in Thakurgaon and Panchagarh triggered violent protest Tuesday afternoon. Agitated locals set fire to a tractor in Thakurgaon and blocked Panchagarh-Thakurgaon highway for two hours protesting the accidents. A six-year-old boy was killed in a road accident at Fakhdanpur village under Sadar upazila of Thakurgaon on Tuesday at about 3:00pm. The victim was identified as Jibon Roy, son of Dinesh Roy of the village. Officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon police station Gopal Chakraborty said the boy was standing in front of his house alongside the village road. Suddenly a tractor came from behind and crushed the boy under its wheels. Agitated locals held the vehicle and set fire to it. They also caught its driver Azaharul Islam and gave him a good beating before handing over to police. In Panchagarh, another boy was killed in a road accident at Vimpukur village under Boda upazila Tuesday afternoon. Victim Arif,10, son of Khademul Islam of the same village was crushed under the wheels of a Dhaka-bound speeding bus coming from Panchagarh while he was crossing the road at about 4:00pm. After the accident, agitated locals barricaded Panchagarh-Thakurgaon highway for two hours protesting the incident and demanding arrest of the driver.
