36 UP poll candidates fined for flouting code

A mobile court fined 36 candidates in the upcoming elections to the union parishdads in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district on Tuesday night for violating election code of conduct and realised Tk 1.12 lakh from them. Of them, eight are in the election race for chairman posts, 19 for member posts and the rest for women's reserved seats of Bawra and Jongra union parishads. The mobile court led by Patgram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Harunur Rashid, also the executive magistrate, punished the candidates for pasting posters on walls and hanging colour banners in public places, violating the election rules. Police said the chairman candidates were fined Tk 5,000 each, member candidates Tk 2,000 to 3,000 each and the candidates for women reserved seats Tk 3,000 each. Our Narail correspondent reported that a chairman aspirant for Noagram Union Parishad under Lohagara upazila held a public meeting at LSJN High School ground at Satrohajari village on Tuesday afternoon, violating the election code of conduct. The candidate, Foizul Haque Rome, arranged the rally which was attended by his supporters from Brahmandanga, Kolagachi and Raigram villages. His supporters then visited different areas of the union on board the vehicles, locally called nasimon, and sought vote for him Foizul's rival candidates Syed Foizul Amir Litu, also the organising secretary of Lohagara upazilka AL, Munshi Akayet Hossain, Syed Ayub Ali, Saeed Ali and Abdul Alim alleged that Foizul violated the election rules by holding a public rally and bringing out a colouful procession in the union. A written complaint was submitted to Lohagara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Arun Kumar Mondol, also the returning officer, against Syed Foizul Haque Rome for violating election code of conduct. Contacted, the UNO said he has already started investigation into the allegation against chairman candidate Foizul Haque Rome.
