An attempt to murder case, filed against 36 people in 2009, has been withdrawn considering it “politically motivated” and aimed at “harassment”. The case was lodged with Singra Police Station on November 27, 2009, accusing 26 people of injuring Babar Ali of Joykuri village and setting fire to his house. Babar's son Alauddin Ali was the complainant of the case. He alleged that the accused attacked his farther with sharp weapons on November 21 as a sequel to previous enmity and set their house afire. After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against 36 accused to the Judicial Magistrate's Court that also framed charges against them and fixed July 24 this year for final hearing of the case. Public Prosecutor (PP) Sirajul Islam said as the home ministry recommended withdrawal of the case, considering it politically motivated and meant for harassment, he submitted a petition to the court to drop the case. Hearing the petition, the court dropped the case on Sunday. After reviewing the documents of the case, the district level committee on withdrawal of politically motivated cases wrote to the home ministry, saying that it was a politically motivated case and meant for harassment, the PP said. The complainant, Alauddin Ali, said his father had no links with any political parties. As a sequel to previous enmity with Mizanur Rahman of the village, Mizan and his hired men hit his father with sharp weapons. “We will appeal to the higher court,” he said. Babar Ali died at Rajshahi Medical College and hospital three months into the incident.
