Storms kill two, destroy hundreds of houses

At least two people were killed and hundreds of houses damaged as storms lashed several districts yesterday and the day before. Two farmers were killed by lightning in Narsingdi during a nor'wester Saturday night. The deceased were identified as Raju Miah, 37, of Gangkulkandi village and Shamsul Haque, 50, of Chak Tatardi village in Monohardi upazila, reports UNB. Local people said the violent storm lashed Monohardi upazila at about 8:00pm and damaged houses, crops and trees in several villages including Anandi, Noapara, Kashipur, Khilgaon, Bhangar Char and Balapur Char. The storm also caused damage to textile mills of the area including Anandi Textile Mill, Biblop Textile Mill and Radhamadhab Textile Mill. Mill owners claimed that the extent of loss could go upto Tk 1 crore. In Noakhali, a storm lashed Nijhum Dwip of Hatiya upazila yesterday afternoon, reports our correspondent. Although it lasted for only 3-4 minutes, it destroyed over 50 houses in Mollagram, Munshigram, Shataphoolgram and Adarshagram villages. Around 30 cattleheads were also swept away in tidal water. In Netrakona, over 200 houses were razed to the ground in five villages of Khaliajuri upazila as a violent storm lashed the areas on Friday night and Saturday morning. Witnesses said, the storm damaged the thatched houses in 15 villages including Asadpur, Roail, Kadirpur, Jugimara, Alipur, Chakua and Lepsia. It also uprooted a large number of trees and electric poles, disrupting power supply since Friday night. Besides, it extensively damaged standing crops on vast areas of land, villagers said. Away in Khagrachhari, over 50 thatched houses were destroyed and many trees, including fruit bearing ones, uprooted in a nor'wester that swept over four upazilas on Saturday night. Local administration sources said, the storm hit Ramgarh, Matiranga, Manikchhari and Laxmichhari upazila at about 8:30pm. Fruit bearing trees of over 100 mixed orchards were damaged. Losses were initially estimated at about Tk one crore. Power supply in the district as well as three other upazilas of Rangamati district remained snapped till filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday as a large number of electric poles were uprooted during the storm. Storm in Natore also lashed several villages in Sadar upazila yesterday destroying scores of houses and damaging a large number of trees.
