Interns at Barisal medical put off strike till Monday
Interns at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital (BSBMCH) yesterday postponed their strike till Monday.
Dr Russell, a leader of the 39th batch of interns, said considering the sufferings of the patients and assurance by the authorities to pay the internship allowance within Sunday, they postponed the strike till Monday.
“We held a meeting yesterday morning and decided to postpone the strike till Monday. It would resume on Tuesday if the allowance is not paid as per assurance,” Russell said.
BSBMCH Director Dr Abdur Rashid said the intern doctors joined their duty at 10:00 am yesterday after we assured them of paying allowance for the month of April within Sunday.
If the fund for allowance is not placed by the ministry by Sunday, then we will give the allowance from our hospital fund on Monday and adjust the amount later, the BSBMCH director said
Medicare services at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (BSBMCH) virtually collapsed as intern doctors of the hospital went on a wildcat strike on Wednesday morning. They were protesting delay in payment of internship allowance for the month of April.
Dr Abdur Rashid alleged that the interns started the strike without any prior announcement.
The monthly internship allowance of Tk 10,000 is usually given within the first week of the next month, but some problems in managing the fund last month led to the delay, Dr Rashid said.
