Maolana Bhasani University of Science and Technology (MBUST) authorities yesterday filed a case against 11 agitating students of Food Technology and Nutritional Science (FTNS) department. Jomrud Hossain, registrar of MBUST, filed the case with Tangail Model police station in the evening bringing allegation of vandalising a university bus by the agitating FTNS department students, said Jasim Uddin Sarkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station. Meanwhile, the students of the department yesterday continued their fast unto death programme that started on Saturday at Shaheed Smrity Pouro Udyan in the town to realise their two-point demand. The demands are removal of the vice-chancellor (VC) and giving BSc (Engineering) degree instead of BSc (Honours) degree to FTNS students. Final year student Abdullah Al-Hadi of the department told this correspondent yesterday that the university authorities were doing all to foil the students' agitation. They have intentionally filed the case against the leaders of the agitating students as the 11 were targeted by the authorities from beginning, he said. “However, as there is no way to return, we will continue our programme unto death and the VC will be held responsible for all consequences,” he added. Contacted, Prof M Nurul Islam, vice-chancellor (VC) of MBUST, told this correspondent that he would not step down in face of the situation. “Besides, there is no legal scope to give engineering degree to the agitating students,” the VC added. Over 200 students of the FTNS department at MBUST have been boycotting classes since July 12 last year and holding a series of agitation demanding BSc (Engineering) degree in place of BSc (Honours) degree. To realise the demand, they started fast unto death for the second time on Saturday morning.
