'Allocate more funds for Rajshahi city'

Hundreds of people formed a human chain in the city yesterday demanding special allocation of funds in the upcoming budget for development of Rajshahi city and welfare of the city dwellers. They demanded allocation of funds for implementation of North Rajshahi Irrigation Project (NRIP), construction of the Ganges Barrage, development of healthcare facilities, supply of natural gas, introduction of town service buses and a cricket test venue in Rajshahi. Organised by Rajshahi Rakkha Sangram Parishad (RRSP) at Shaheb Bazar zero point, Mayor AHM Khairuzaman Liton and lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha also joined the human chain and expressed their solidarity with the demands. Addressing a rally at the venue, Mayor AHM Khairuzaman Liton stressed the need for implementation of NRIP. He said the project work should start immediately as desertification process is going on in Rajshahi due to excessive use of ground water. Lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha demanded reopening of all mills and factories that were closed during BNP-Jamaat rule, leaving hundreds of people jobless. He also demanded introduction of an intensive care unit at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. Freedom fighter Dr Abdul Mannan, teacher Taslima Hossain, councillor Belal Ahmed, district unit Mohila Parishad General Secretary Kalpona Roy and RRSP Generals Scretary Jamat Khan also spoke at the rally with RRSP President Liakat Ali in the chair.
