Kurigram BNP to enforce half-day hartal today
Kurigram district unit of BNP will enforce a half-day hartal in the town today demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of Jubo Dal leader Kamal Ahmed Bipul
A gang of five allegedly led by town Tarun League convener Mashud and Jubo League activist Shahin swooped on Kamal Ahmed Bipul, 32, vice-president of Jubo Dal Kurigram Sadar upazila unit, in Power House area at around 3:00pm on Thursday.
They beat him up and hit on the head with iron rod. Locals rescued Bipul and took him to Kurigram Sadar Hospital. As Bipul's condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) at around 6:00pm and then referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he died on Friday morning.
Locals said the attack was a sequel to a conflict between Bipul and the Jubo League and Tarun League men over control of Khalilganj area in the town.
Hearing the news, local leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies took out a procession in the town at around 8:00am on Friday and blocked Kurigram-Dhaka highway.
The road blockade was withdrawn at around 3:30 after lawmaker from Kurigram-2 constituency and General Secretary of Awami League district unit Md Jafar Ali, Deputy Commissioner Md Habibur Rahman and Police Superintendent Md Mahbubur Rahman visited the victim's house and assured the bereaved family of taking the killers to book.
District BNP Joint Secretary Sohel Hosnin Kaikobad said Bipul came under attack by Jubo League and Tarun League activists while he was going to his in a rickshaw at 3.00 pm on Thursday.
The first namaj-e-janaza for Kamal Ahmed Bipul was held on the premises of district BNP office at 9:00am yesterday. After the second namaj-e-janaza at Khalilganj High School ground near his house at around 11:30am, he was buried at Kurigram central graveyard.
Bipul's brother Reaz Uddin Ahmed yesterday filed a case with Kurigram Police Station against five Tarun League and Jubo League men. They are Masud (1), Shahin, Masud (2), Rustam and Babu.
