41 murders, 80 unnatural deaths in last 4 months
At least 41 murders and over 80 unnatural deaths were recorded in the last four months in eight upazilas much to the concern of the people of the district.
Within a span of 10 days from May 1, at least seven people were murdered in the district while complaint of 53 mugging incidents were lodged with four police stations - Kotwali, Mithapukur, Pirganj and Taraganj.
Majority of snatching and mugging incidents occurred in Rangpur town. The hotbeds are Rangpur Fire Station area, Lalbagh area, Goneshpur area, Munshipara area, Keramotia High School point area and Rangpur Medical College East gate area.
At least 14 murders and 21 unnatural deaths took place in April while in March nine murders and 20 unnatural deaths were recorded in eight upazilas of the district.
In February, 11 murders and 23 unnatural deaths were recorded while in January seven murder and 24 unnatural death cases were recorded.
According to Rangpur court record, 47 people were killed in first six months of 2010 and 39 in the last six months of that year from July to December.
Among major incidents, a cattle lifter was beaten to death at Saleasha village under Khalea union in Gangachara upaila in early hours of April 30.
An army personnel, corporal Nazrul Islam, was stabbed indiscriminately at Khalifapara on the same day.
A Jubo Dal activist was also killed on April 30 under Kotwali police station in Rangpur town. The criminals stabbed him on the neck and cut off two of his hands. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).
Locals at Gulalbudai village under Rangpur Sadar upazila recovered the body of vegetable trader Kandura, 55, from the Ghagot River on May 1.
Amzad Hossain, member of Etakumari union parishad under Pirgachha upazila, succumbed to his injuries on April 26 at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. He was attacked by a rival villager on April 12.
Rafiqul Islam, 45, of Badarganj municipality area succumbed to his injuries on April 26 after one Abdul Jabbar, along with two of his sons hit Rafiqul with sharp weapons on the previous day.
A student of class-VII of Paglapir High School in Hariderpur union under Rangpur Sadar upazila was stabbed to death on April 28.
Hafiza Beua, 70, of Nishbetganj village under Sathgara union in Rangpur Sadar upazila was murdered on April 29 at her house.
Two policemen were injured on April 27 at Baldipukur under Mithapukur upazila as the muggers stabbed them while fleeing the scene after committing crime.
Asked, Superintendent of police Saleh Mohammad Tanvir said police are taking action against the killers.
“Many of the killers have already been arrested”, he added.
“Killing is not related to law and order situation”, he said adding “Police have strengthened patrolling in the town to curb crimes including mugging and snatching.”
