60-day ban on fishing in hilsa-rich areas
A 60-day ban on fishing, including catching hilsa fry, locally known as jatka, from March-April took effect in all hilsa-rich areas and Meghna river in Chandpur and Laxmipur from Monday midnight.
The ban will continue till midnight of April 30 this year.
District fishery officer Ratan Dutta said an area from Uttar Matlab upazila of Chandpur to Char Alexander of Laxmipur, over a stretch of 100 kilometers on both banks of Meghna and its tributaries and confluences, will fall under the purview of the ban.
He said the ban on catching fries including jatka, hilsa fish smaller than 23 centimeters in length, is imposed from March 1 to April 30 every year in all hilsa-rich areas of the country since 2006.
Catching jatka during the aforesaid period is deemed as punishable offence. Police, Navy and Coastguards in boats and ships will keep watch at different points of hilsa-rich areas in the next 60 days starting from Monday.
