Barkal upazila leader of Jubo Samity, an associate body of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), was gunned down allegedly by the armed cadres of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) at Ladibanshchhara under the upazila at midnight on Tuesday. The victim, Bikram Chakma, 26, was the secretary of Jubo Samity Barkal upazila unit. A group of armed men called Bikram out of his house at Ladibanshchhara village at around 11:45pm and shot him point blank. He died on the spot. Victim's wife Ratna Chakma filed a murder case with Barkal Police Station yesterday. PCJSS and it student front Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) yesterday brought out a procession in the town and held a protest rally on the premises of Rangamati Deputy Commissioner's Office. Chaired by PCJSS district unit Vice-President Subarno Chakma, Vice- President of PCJSS central committee Subhas Basu Chakma, Assistant Information and Publicity Secretary Sajib Chakma, PCP President Bablu Chakma, and Hill Women's Federation leader Chanchala Chakma addressed rally. The speakers blamed UPDF for the killing and demanded immediate arrest of the killers. They also urged the government to ban the anti-peace treaty organisation. Michael Chakma, Rangamati district unit leader of UPDF, yesterday denied allegation, saying that Bikram was killed due to internal conflict of PCJSS In another incident, a Union Parishad (UP) member was kidnapped from his house at Perachhara village in Longudu upazila of the district on Monday allegedly by the armed cadres of PCJSS reformists. Family members said the kidnappers picked up Jyotish Kanti Chakma at gun point and demanded Tk 3 lakh ransom for his release.
