Fellows Assaulted Allegedly by Jubo League Men
Transport workers block road
Transport workers yesterday blocked Dhaka-Khulna highway near Arappur bus stand in Jhenidah town protesting assault on some fellow workers allegedly by Jubo League activists at Garaganj Bazar under Shailkupa upazila on Sunday.
Transport workers alleged that Jubo League men backed by local bus and mini-bus owners' association president Abdullah Al Baki also took control of the ticket counters at the Bazar, ousting their colleagues.
They demanded removal of the Jubo League men from bus and mini-bus counters and arrest of those who assaulted transport workers.
Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the road for one and half an hours from 10:00am, causing sufferings to the passengers.
The agitating transport workers lifted the blockade after Jhenidah police superintendent assured them of taking necessary steps to meet their demands.
Witnesses said a group of Jubo League men backed by Abdullah Al Baki entered the bus and mini-bus counters at Garaganj Bazar at around 11:00am on Sunday and forced four transport workers to leave the counters.
As the transport workers tried to resist the Jubo League activists, they beat up some transport workers and captured the counters, the witnesses added.
Jhenidah bus and mini-bus Sramik Union President Waliar Rahman said Baki has employed Juba league cadres at the ticket counters, ousting the transport workers.
He demanded immediate removal of Jubo League men from the counters arrest of those who beat up transport workers at Garaganj Bazar on Sunday.
The sramik union chief also threatened fresh agitation if their demands were not met.
