Poaching: 2 court staff suspended
Two employees of Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge's Court, who poached 11 young pankuris (cormorant) at a sanctuary here on Saturday, were suspended yesterday.
They are Saroj Biswas, 48, and Moni Sheikh, 40. District and Sessions Judge GM Salahuddin suspended the two, asking them to explain within two working days why departmental action would not be taken against them.
The employees caught the young cormorants from the sanctuary in old court area in the morning. Locals surrounded the employees and informed Sunderbans East Division Forest Officer Mihir Kumar Dey about the matter over cellphone. But the poachers had left the scene before the forest officer came.
Later, Forest Officer Mihir Kumar Dey found seven slaughtered cormorants, three dead ones and a live cormorant on the premises of the old court. He also recovered a knife from there. He immediately brought the matter to the notice of the district and sessions judge.
A bird sanctuary has been developed in the old court area adjacent to the official residence of the deputy commissioner over the last one decade.
Forest Officer Mihir Kumar Dey yesterday told this correspondent that the dead birds were buried on the forest department office premises.
