Death of Feni Student in Road Mishap

Highway blocked; vehicles damaged, buses set afire

Students went on the rampage in Feni town yesterday following death of a fellow in a road accident. They blocked Dhaka-Chittagong highway for one and a half hours, damaged at least 30 vehicles and set fire to six town service buses on College Road, Hospital Road and Trunk Road. The students also assaulted two doctors and five employees of Feni Sadar Hospital where a college student, who received injuries in the road accident, died soon after admission. Police and witnesses said a passenger bus of Green Town Service collided with a motorcycle coming from opposite direction at GA Academy area in the town at noon, leaving three students who were riding the motorbike injured. The students also received burn injuries as the bus and motorbike caught fire after collision. The injured students were taken to Feni Sadar Hospital where Salahuddin, a first year honours student of political science department at Feni Government College, died. Two other injured--Zakir Hossain Millat and Ziko--are students of Feni Polytechnic Institute. They were admitted to the hospital and later shifted to Dhaka as their condition deteriorated. Hearing the news, students of Feni Polytechnic Institute rushed to the hospital. At one stage, they attacked two on-duty doctors and five employees of the hospital for their alleged neglect of duties. They also ransacked different rooms of the hospital. The injured are Dr Moloy Chakraborty, Dr Shah Jamal Khan, technician Abdur Razzak, gate man Abdus Sattar, security guard Dulal Mia, ward boy Saiful, and Nasima, an employee at the hospital ticket counter. Later, the students of the polytechnic institute, equipped with sticks, came out of the hospital, damaged vehicles and torched six buses.
