<i>12 Indians languishing in jail</i>
BSF refuses to take them back
Twelve Indian nationals are languishing in jail here despite completion of their jail terms more than a year ago.
Immediately after end to their prison terms, The jail officials tried to send them back to India but failed as Indian Border Security Force (BSF) repeatedly declined to take them, Satkhira jail authorities said.
Failing to send them back to India, the jail authorities are now facing a lot of problems, sources said.
The Indian nationals languishing in Satkhira jail are Shafiqul Islam of village Kulti in Bhangar, Kartik Chandra Mondal, Paritosh Mondal and Pijush Mondal of village Hemnagar, Narayan Adhikari and Subrata Biswas of village Kalitala, Yusuf Gazi, Montu Mistri and Ranga Gazi of village Shamsernagar and Samsuddin alias Abdul Karim of village Pifa in Hingalganj and Bikash Mondal and Fazar Ali of village Satjelia in Gosaba under North 24 Parganas district in India.
Shafiqul Islam, arrested from Laboni Cinema Hall in Satkhira town with firearms on March 9 in 1991, was sentenced to suffer 17 years imprisonment on January 5 in 1992. His jail term ended on September 7 in 2006.
Prison terms of Kartik Chandra Mondal and Pijush Chandra Mondal were completed on April 14 in 2008 while prison term of Narayan Adhikari and Subrata Biswas on April 4 in 2008.
Prison term of Paritosh Mondal was completed on July 7 in 2007 while prison terms of Yusuf Gazi, Montu Mistri, Shamsuddin Gazi, Fazar Ali, Bikash Mondal and Ranga Gazi ended on March 22 in 2007, jail sources said.
On completion of their prison terms, the jail authorities tried to hand them over to Indian authorities several times but Indian Border Security Force (BSF) refused to accept them. Since then all the 12 have been languishing in Satkhira jail.
While talking to this correspondent, Kartik Chandra Mondal, Pijush Chandra Mondal, Shafiqul Islam and others at the jail gate urged the authorities concerned to take measures so that they can go back to India and meet the near and dear ones.
Contacted, Jail Superintendent Nurunnabi said they are not being able to send back the Indian nationals as the Indian authorities are not showing interest to resolve their 'legal problem'.
The moment we get order from the government or the court, we will send them to India, he added. He said the jail authorities are taking all care of the Indian nationals in the jail.
