Sylhet sees highest pass rate among 10 education boards
The Sylhet education board saw the highest 76.12 per cent pass in this year's HSC examinations while the average of the country's 10 education boards including the madrasa board and the technical education board is 74.28 per cent.
This year the board achieved the ever highest pass percentage since it started conducting the HSC examinations in 2001, Prof Manir Uddin Ahmed, controller of examinations of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Sylhet, said at a press conference at the board yesterday afternoon.
The number of GPA-5 achievers from the board this year is 597, which is 158 higher than the last year's figure.
Of the GPA-5 recipients, 425 are from science group, 110 from business studies and the rest 62 from humanities group. Sylhet MC College got the highest 138 GPA-5 followed by the Jalalabad Cantonment Public School and College with 119.
Of the 130 institutions, four got hundred per cent pass while there is none with zero pass percentage.
Of the 19,820 examinees who appeared in this year's HSC examinations under the Sylhet board, 15,087 students, including 7,391 boys and 7,696 girls, came out successful.
Students from the business studies group did the best among groups for the 5th consecutive year. It was 89.6 percent against 89.06 per cent in last year.
In science group, 71.81 per cent of students achieved success while it was 74.37 per cent in last year. In humanities group, 73.63 per cent examinees came out successful while it was 71.32 per cent last year.
The BISE, Sylhet conducted HSC examinations for the first time in 2001 when only 30.63 per cent of the 17,180 examinees came out successful. The pass percentage came down to 28.69 in the following year when 17,444 examinees appeared. In 2003, a total of 19,286 students appeared in the examination and 33.38 per cent came out successful.
Pass percentage in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 was 46.69, 44.4, 65.45, 65.98 and 71.17 respectively.
In last year, 13,413 students came out successful against a total of 18,136 examinees. The pass percentage was 73.96.
