An upazila agriculture official was suspended yesterday for his alleged link to manufacturing fake fertiliser and selling those among farmers. Following a directive from the agriculture ministry, the authorities at the local Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office suspended Bagmara upazila official M Alamgir Hossain. According to DAE Deputy Director Mohsin Ali, the accused was also served with a showcause notice asking to reply as to why he engaged his staffs in criminal activities. The DAE also suspended an employee, Ataur Rahman, and cancelled dealership of fertiliser trader Abdus Salam Mondol after seizing his security money on the same ground. Both DAE officer Alamgir and dealer Salam have gone into hiding. They were engaged in manufacturing adulterated fertiliser together for long. Bagmara police on July 9, acting on a tip-off, seized 537 sacks of adulterated fertiliser from Salam's warehouse at Taherpur municipality. Police arrested red-handed three people including DAE peon Ataur Rahman. During police interrogation, Ataur revealed Alamgir's misdeeds. He told police that Alamgir used to order him to make adulterated fertiliser, said Harun-ur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Bagmara police station. Bagmara police recorded a case against seven people including Alamgir and Salam in this connection. Two other arrestees in the case are labourers -- Abdul Hakim Mondol of Durgapur and Rabiul Islam of Puthia. The seized items included 298 sacks of adulterated MOP, 72 sacks of TSP and 291 sacks of MP fertilisers and equipments for making adulterated fertiliser.
