12 militant suspects placed on remand in Jamalpur
Twelve militant suspects, arrested in Jamalpur on July 8, were remanded for three days on Sunday.
Jamalpur Sadar police arrested them while holding secret meeting at a house in Beltia area in Jamalpur district town.
They produced the 12 arrestees in the court of Masudur Rahman, additional judicial magistrate in Jamalpur seeking five days remand. The court, however, granted a three-day remand.
The suspected militants are Anwarul Islam of Fotehpur in Rangpur, Hafizur Rahman of Kaharol in Dinajpur, Abdul Mannan of Sarishabari in Jamalpur, Fakhrul Islam of Jhinaigati and Saifullah of Rajballavpur in Sherpur, Jasimuddin of Barura in Comilla, Mohammad Younus of Kishoreganj, Hafez Mohammad Belal Hossain of Iswarganj and Rustam Ali Mallik, Abdus Sattar, Yousuf Ali and Habibor Rahman of Phulbaria in Mymensingh.
When police raided the house and arrested them during the meeting, the aforesaid people introduced themselves as the members of Manob Unnayon Foundation, police said.
Meantime, Mohammad Ibrahim, founder director of the organisation and also principal of a local Bahumukhi Karimia Hafezia Madrasa, held a press conference at his office on Sunday claiming that the arrestees are officials, teachers and students of his organisation.
He also claimed that the arrested people had no link with militancy or politics of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir.
However, Mehdi Hassan, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar police station, told this correspondent yesterday that police had no previous information about the organisation.
Police have taken them on remand to find out why the 12 people from different districts were holding secret meeting at a lonely house, he said.
"We are also waiting for further information about the arrestees from police stations concerned," the OC added.
