Transport strike called off in Meherpur as Nosiman banned

Our Correspondent, Kushtia
Transport owners and workers yesterday finally called off their indefinite strike in Meherpur after the district administration imposed a ban on plying of Nosiman, a locally made carrier, on four significant routes. The routes are Kushtia-Meherpur, Meherpur-Chuadanga, Meherpur-Hatboalia and Meherpur-Atkabar. The transports owners and workers withdrew the strike after a four-hour meeting with the district administration from 7:00pm on Saturday. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Meherpur Benjamin Hembrom. Different transports owners and workers associations including Bus-Minibus Owners Association, Transport Workers Association, Rented Micro Owners Association and Truck Owners Association enforced the strike demanding ban on illegal service by Nosiman. The district administration arranged the meeting after Southwestern Transport Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad, at a meeting held in Meherpur Saturday afternoon, threatened to call an indefinite strike in entire Khulna division if their demand is not fulfilled within three days. In the meeting, the owners and workers held local police, district administration and a ruling party lawmaker of the district responsible for the situation. “We have withdrawn the strike after the local administration fulfilled our demand,” Zohirul Islam, president of Bus Owners Association in Meherpur, said yesterday. The transport owners and workers first called the strike on July 2 after Nosiman owners beat up two staff at Gangni upazila bus counter as the two protested illegal parking of Nosiman occupying the bus counter. The associations went on strike demanding ban on illegal service by Nosiman and punishment of the Nosiman owners, who attacked and injured the staff. The callers withdrew the strike on July 4 giving a three-day ultimatum after the district administration assured them of resolving the matter. But the transport owners and workers associations again went on indefinite strike on July 8 as the administration failed to meet their demands by the deadline set by them.
