Transports go off roads in Meherpur again
Owners, workers enforce indefinite strike to press for demands
Transport owners and workers associations in Meherpur again went on an indefinite strike yesterday to press home their four-point demand.
Leaders of different transports owners and workers associations including Bus-Minibus Owners Association, Transport Workers Association, Microbus Owners Association and Truck Owners Association took the decision in a meeting held on Wednesday night.
They blamed the district administration for not taking necessary steps to meet their demands as assured by the administration in a meeting on Sunday with the deputy commissioner (DC) in the chair.
Their demands include ban on Nosiman, a locally made vehicle, on main roads, punishment to the Nosiman owners for attacking a bus worker on July 2 in Gangni upazila headquarters and functioning of mobile courts on the roads.
“We again enforced the strike as the district administration did not meet any of the demands,” Zohirul Islam, president of Bus Owners Association in Meherpur said.
Contacted, the deputy commissioner said police have already arrested the attackers of bus staff and the mobile courts are working on the roads.
On July 2, Nosiman owners parked their vehicles occupying a place at Gangni upazila bus stand in the district. Following an altercation with bus workers, Nosiman owners beat up a bus worker at the stand.
The incident triggered a series of clashes between the two sides, leaving at least 20 people injured.
Later, transport owners and workers enforced an indefinite strike in the district on Saturday to press home their demand. They withdrew the strike on Sunday as the district administration assured them of meeting their demands.
