A BNP leader of Meherpur district was chopped and slaughtered on Tuesday night by unknown criminals at Kaliabakri in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga. Police recovered the severed head and body of Nazrul Islam, 50, BNP organising secretary of Meherpur Sadar upazila unit, from the spot yesterday morning. Nazrul was also a member of Pirojpur union parishad of Meherpur. Police, quoting witnesses and family members, said a gang of 5 to 6 swooped on Nazrul when he was talking to his party men at a grocery near his residence at Kathanpota village in Meherpur Sadar upazila at about 9:30pm. The gang swiftly put a gag and picked up Nazrul at gunpoint. They chopped him with sharp weapon and severed his head from the body taking him to Kaliabakri in adjacent Chuadanga, just two kilometres away from Kathanpota village. Officer-in-Chage (OC) of Meherpur Sadar police station and sub-inspector (SI) Zihad confirmed the incident. After the incident, the criminals left the place exploding several bombs. Later, locals found the severed head and body of Nazrul and informed police. The body was sent to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Leaders and activists of BNP Meherpur district unit, led by former lawmaker of Meherpur-1 Masud Arun, brought out a procession in the Meherpur town at about 11:30pm protesting the killing. They demanded immediate arrests of the killers of Nazrul. After the killing, police launched a drive but failed to arrest any of the killers. Iqbal Hossain, Meherpur Superintendent of Police, told this correspondent that police were continuing their drive to arrest the killers. Father of two children, Nazrul was an influential BNP leader of Meherpur, local sources said.
