Drug, contraband items seized in border dists
Law enforcers recovered drug and contraband items from bordering districts on Saturday and the day before.
A patrol team of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) of Chaderhat Border Outpost (BOP) recovered 1120 bottles of phensidyl early Saturday from border area of Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon, reports our correspondent.
BDR members of 2 Rifles Battalion led by Subeder Shafiqur Rahman recovered the banned syrup in abandoned condition at about 1:00am.
Sensing presence of BDR personnel the drug smugglers left the bottles and fled away, BDR sources said.
In Dinajpur, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized phensidyl, sex stimulating tablets, saris and other contraband items worth Tk 35 lakh in separate drives at Joypurhat and adjacent Ghoraghat upazila on Friday.
Sharif Uddin Ahmed, senior ASP of Rab-5 Joypurhat camp told UNB that acting on secret information, they raided different areas of the district town and seized 1.30 lakh tablets, 48 pieces of saris, 58 three-piece dress materials, 158 T-shirts, two bicycles and bangles worth about Tk 7 lakh.
At the same time, another team of Rab seized 177 pieces of Indian sari worth over Tk 1.50 lakh at Gobindaganj in Dinajpur. But the smugglers managed to flee the scene.
Earlier, Rab members recovered 675 bottles of phensidyl syrup and other contraband items worth Tk 25 lakh from a truck.
In another drive, police and BDR conducted a joint drive at Noor Market in the town and seized 409 kgs of Indian steel goods worth about Tk 1.50 lakh.
In Benapole, Jessore, the members of Bangladesh Rifles in a drive arrested a drug peddler along with 320 bottles of phensidyl at Balunda village on Friday.
The arrestee was identified as Golam Mostafa, son of Abdur Rahim of nearby Raghunathpur village.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of BDR members raided the village and arrested Golam Mostafa along with contraband drug. A case was filed in this connection.
