Chairman for action against 4, students protest decision

The chairman of fine arts department at Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday recommended that the university authorities suspend four students of the department for leading the June 28 incident. The accused are third year student Tanjib Ahmed, fourth year student Sarwar, and second year students Asib Kabir and Sujan. Protesting the chairman's recommendation for suspension of the four, students of fine arts department staged a demonstration at the department and submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor. Chairman Prof Abdul Matin Talukder said he made the recommendation to Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan as per decision of the academic committee's meeting held on Thursday. The department's academic committee accused the four students of instigating the incident, he added. Students of fine arts department on June 28 confined Proctor Prof Chowdhury Zakaria, department Chairman Abdul Motin Talukdar and three teachers to office and classroom protesting abrupt increase in fees for filling up examination forms. The authorities recently hiked the fees for filling up final year examination forms of the students of 2006-07 session from Tk 350 to Tk 3,030.The students also vandalised the department's windows, notice board and furniture and burnt an effigy of the department chairman. They also confined the proctor to a classroom as he could not give any assurance to resolve the issue. In the memorandum, the fine arts students alleged that department chairman Prof Abdul Matin Talukdar recommended suspension of the four students without taking decision of the academic committee. Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan told the students that the university authorities would soon investigate the matter and take steps on the basis of the investigation report. Addressing a press conference on the campus yesterday, the fine arts students alleged that the department chairman recommended action against the four students without investigating the June 28 incident. Three members of the academic committee requesting anonymity told this correspondent that the chairman recommended suspension of the four students without the decision of the committee.
