Army members arrest UPDF activist Alokmoy Chakma on charge of extortion and seize huge documents from his possession at Islampur under Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari district yesterday.Photo: STAR

Army yesterday detained a United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) activist on charge of extorting money from transport owners in Matiranga upazila of the district. Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Matiranga police station, said a team led by Captain Wasik Billa of Matiranga zone army raided Islampur area and detained Alokmoy Chakma, 45, along with Tk 10 thousand. The team also seized six account books, five subscription books, knives, leaflets, national ID cards, posters and other documents belonging to UPDF. Alokmoy's accomplice Prakash Chakma, however, managed to escape, the OC said. Alokmoy of Pujgang village under Panchhari upazila said he had been collecting money from constructors and transport owners for his organisation United People's Democratic Front. He also admitted that he was once a member of Shanti Bahini, former armed section of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS). Alokmoy was later handed over to police. A case has been filed with Matiranga police station accusing him and Prakash of collecting illegal toll for UPDF. Meanwhile, UPDF District Press Secretary Niron Chakma, in a press release, demanded immediate release of Alokmoy claiming him innocent.
