Tk 20cr for 10,000 Aila-hit families in Satkhira
Food and Disaster Management Ministry has allocated Tk 20 crore for rehabilitation of 10,000 Aila-hit families of two upazilas of the district.
District Administration sources said the amount will be distributed among 9,500 families of Gabura and Padmapukur unions in Shyamnagar upazila and 500 families of Protapnagar union in Assasuni upazila.
Each cyclone affected family will get Tk 20,000 for purchasing two bundles of CI sheet and other house building materials.
Deputy Commissioner of the district M Abdus Samad said the process of opening bank account for the affected people is going on to distribute the money through the bank.
Aila affected people in the three districts of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira have been living in misery even a year after the devastating cyclone.
"We do not want aid, we want to work for survive. The government and foreign aid organisations could not provide aid including food and drinking water over the year. If they create work opportunity for us, we can have a new lease of life," Abdul Khalek, a resident of Noynumber Shura under Gagura UP, said.
The people of the region opted for shrimp cultivation leaving their traditional paddy cultivation over the last two decades.
As hundreds of kilometers of the embankments were damaged after Aila, tidal waters entered the shrimp enclosures twice a day washing away large stretches of shrimp enclosures and rendering a huge number of people of the area jobless.
In Chandpur, cyclone Aila affected fishermen and fish farmers under a rehabilitation scheme were also provided with supporting materials at a function held recently at Zahirabad UP complex premises in Matlab North upazila.
Upazila Fisheries Office took the initiative. Kamal Uddin Chowdhury, Chairman of Jahirabad UP presided over the function while Upazilla Chairman Mizanur Rahman was present as the chief guest.
At the function, a total of 50 fishermen and fish farmers of Zahirabad UP and 41 fishermen and fish farmers of Shatnol UP of the upazila were provided with necessary inputs including 5,800 kg lime, 4,000 kg urea fertiliser, 2240 kg TSP fertiliser and 26,000 fish fries of various species free to cost.
