Police arrested 30 more activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in the district raising the total to 34. Police in six upazilas of the district raided different places from Wednesday midnight to yesterday morning and arrested them. Earlier, police arrested four leaders of the party including its district Ameer Abdul wahed. Others were district Nayeb-e Ameer Farhad Hossain, Kumarkhali municipal unit acting Ameer, also son-in-law of district Nayeb-e Ameer Abdul Bari Patwari and Ameer of Bheramara municipal unit Jamaat Harun-ur Rashid. Police produced all the 34 arrestees before district judicial magistrate court yesterday afternoon and the court sent them to jail. Police said they arrested the Jamaat activists and the four leaders on charge of their involvement with 'subversive' activities. According to police, the Jamaat activists brought out procession and created law and order situation in different areas of the district following arrest of central Jamaat leaders on Tuesday. In Sherpur, three local leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami were arrested from different areas of the district town yesterday morning, according to UNB. The arrestees were identified as Maulana Abdul Baten, general secretary of district unit Jamaat, Anwer Hossain and Ayub Ali. ASP (Circle) Iqbal Shafi said they were arrested on charges of sabotage and violating law and order. Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Rajshahi University (RU) unit yesterday demanded trial of Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Nayeb-e Ameer Delwar Hossain Saydee for war crime, reports a RU correspondent. At a rally on the campus, BCL leaders also demanded immediate punishment to people involved in killing of BCL worker Faruk Hossain on campus on February 9. They alleged that Faruk was killed as per instruction of the Jamaat top leaders. Earlier at around noon, several hundred BCL leaders and activists formed a human chain in front of the university central library. It was followed by a procession on the campus demanding trial of war criminals. In Chapainawabganj, a few Jamaat activists gathered at Chapainawabganj club super market and suddenly brought out a procession. Led by Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila Ameer Mokhleshur Rahman, it paraded about 200 yards and ended at the new market gate. The processionists left the place hurriedly to avoid arrest, reports our correspondent.
