Armed Shibir cadres clash with police, 7 injured
At least seven people, including two policemen, were injured as armed Shibir cadres clashed with police in the city's Shaheb Bazar area last night.
The clash erupted at around 7:30pm when police intercepted a Shibir procession brought out in the area demanding release of the three top Jamaat leaders.
As police charged batons to disperse the processionists, they hurled two cocktails at the law enforcers, leaving two cops injured.
Five Shibir cadres were also injured in police action. None of them could be identified as they fled the scene.
Police arrested six Shibir men, including acting city unit Shibir General Secretary Abu Bakar Siddik, on the spot. Other arrestees are Moklesur Rahman, Mahbubul Ahsan, MA Malek, Naimul Haq, and M Hasan.
Tension sparked at Sonadighi Malopara, Gonakpara and Bhuban Mohon Park areas as Shibir cadrs, equipped with cocktails and sticks, tried to bring out processions. Chase and counter-chase between police and Shibir cadres took place in the areas for several minutes.
