Heavy rain in the last 48 hours has further worsened the flood situation in Netrakona, Gaibandha and Sirajganj districts. About one lakh have been marooned as floodwater inundated at least 30 more villages in two bordering upazilas of Durgapur and Kamlakanda in Netrakona, reports our correspondent. The water level of the rivers Someshwary and Ubdakhali have swelled further. The Someshwary was flowing 73 centimeter and the Ubdakhali 65 centimeter above the danger level. Hill water from across the border has added to the situation, according to Water Development Board (WDB) sources. The newly affected villages include Shreepur , Kachuhatta, Nayantara, Tarotopa, Nollapara, Ranagaw, Bishara, Korkhakandi, Bawshair and Haikati in Kalmakanda upazila and Gawkandia, Bhagua, Shreepur, Sankarpur, Khamarkhali and Shibgonj in Durgapur upazila, administration sources said. Kalmakanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sikander Hayat Rizvi said, flood waters washed away about 100 houses in different villages of Kalmakanda upazila. Durgapur UNO Rashedul Islam told this correspondent that erosion by the river Sumeshowary devoured at least 25 dwelling houses at Dhakumara and Shibganj villages Monday night. In Giabandha, floodwater has marooned at least 24,000 people in different shoals along the Jamuna basin in Sadar, Shaghata and Fulchari upazilas following onrush of water from upstream and unceasing rainfall. Water level of the river Brahmaputra was flowing 54 cm above danger mark yesterday while at Ghagot it was flowing 16 cm above red mark. Fresh areas in Gaibandha town have also been flooded, reports our correspondent. Cracks have developed at many points of flood control embankment at Katlamari, Uria and Hasilkandi. Road communications in remote shoal areas snapped as the roads went under knee to waist deep water. Jute, amon seedlings and vegetables on vast areas were submerged by floodwater. Many of the schoolhouses in shoal areas have been shut down as they were inundated or turned into flood shelters. A Correspondent in Sirajganj adds: At least 300 houses have been submerged in a village in Sadar upazila due to heavy rain and rise of water level in the Jumuna river. Heavy pressure of water is threatening Ranigram-Khokshabari embankment, locals said. Khokshabari village was flooded due to overnight rain and collapse of an old embankment, they said. Water Development Board authorities said they are working to prevent further damage of the embankment.
