Khulna People Demand
Install 300 MW power plant as planned
Leaders of Khulna Development Forum (KDF) have demanded installation of a 300 MW power plant to mitigate severe power outage in the south-western region.
Two power plants of Khulna Power Station are unable to meet electricity need in 10 districts of Khulna division, six districts of Barisal division and five districts of greater Faridpur region under West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL), they said in a press conference yesterday.
Because, these two power plants, having 110 MW and 60 MW capacity, often go out of order due to major technical faults and also lack of overhauling for over a decade, Sharif Shafiqul Hamid Chandan, president of Khulna Development Forum, said in the conference at Khulna Press Club.
Bangladesh and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up a 300 MW power plant in Khulna during the prime minister's recent visit to China, he said.
"But we are surprised to see that a 35 MW rental power plant has been set up while work for setting up another 35 MW rental power plant is going on just at the site selected for installation of a new 300 MW power plant," the KDF president said.
He demanded early implementation of the MoU signed with China for a new 300 MW power plant in Khulna, reopening of all closed jute mills and Khulna Newsprint Mill, modernisation of Mongla seaport and setting up a tourist spot in the Sundarbans.
Convenor of Khulna 300 MW Power Plant Implementation Action Committee Lokman Hakim was present in the press conference.
