BDR rescues 8 in Sherpur, BSF hands over 5

Eight Bangladeshis were rescued by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) men at the Haldigram frontier early yesterday while being trafficked to India. The victims are Abdul Quddus, 70, and his wife Nurjahan, 45, his two-year-old son Arif, Sattar, 65, and his wife Hazera Begum,60, of Munshir Char village in Sadar upazila, Nurul Islam, 40, Abdul Zabbar, 55, Nurul Miah,42, of Saichakura village in Nalitabari upazila. Trafficker Anisur Rahman, 40, of Burunga village was also arrested. Police said a patrol team of 45 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) arrested them while crossing Haldigram frontier. Another two traffickers Ismail, 35, and Shafiqul,20, of Gumra village in Jhenigati upazila, however, managed to flee the scene. Meanwhile, Indian Border Security Force (BSF) handed over five women to BDR through Benapole border check post on Wednesday afternoon. The two women who were trafficked to India are Nasrin Sultana, 16, Shilpi Begum, 18, Munni Khanam, 17, of Bahirdanga village in Kalia upazila of Narail district, Farida Khatun, 19, of Mallikpur village in Khulna district, Sirajum Manira, 19, of Kuri Kaonia village in Satkhira district. BDR sources said in 2008 a gang of human traffickers in the name of giving good jobs took them to Mumbai. Later, Chennai town police held them and sent them to jail. After long imprisonment they were handed over to BDR through BSF following intervention of a human rights organisation 'Rights Jessore'.
