Ferry sinks, passengers rescued

A ferry of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) with seven vehicles and around 250 passengers on board capsized in the Meghna near Eidgah ferry terminal in Shariatpur district yesterday. As the panic-stricken passengers jumped in the river, fishermen from nearby boats and trawlers rushed to the spot and rescued them. BIWTC Assistant Manager Jahir Uddin said the Shariatpur-bound ferry from Harinaghat of Chandpur sank into the river as a crack developed at its hull. Rescue vessel Hamza has been called to salvage the ferry, he added. Meanwhile, the shipping ministry yesterday formed a four-member committee, headed by Md Abdul Kuddus, joint secretary (commercial), to investigate the ferry accident. The committee has been asked to submit its report to the secretary of the shipping ministry in the next three working days.
