Students kept under sun for 3 hours for rally
The district administration kept several hundred students waiting under the sun for hours to hold a procession on the occasion of the Public Service Day yesterday.
However, the education ministry had banned participation of students in any kind of government or non-government programmes.
Students of different educational institutions gathered in front of the deputy commissioner's office at 8:30am yesterday to participate in the procession that began at around 10:15 am.
A number of students fell sick after standing in the scorching heat for around two hours.
The procession was led by Deputy Commissioner Gias Uddin who delivered a five-minute speech to the students after the programme ended at 10:45am.
A student of Cox's Bazar KG School said, "I have been suffering from fever for the last three days. Upon recovery I went to school today. Now I have a bad headache as I was in the sun for so long.”
A number of teachers requesting anonymity said though students' participation in such programmes is banned, education officials make them bring students on occasions.
No notice or letter was issued to the heads of school regarding participation of the students.
Sadar upazila primary Education Officer Abu Ahmed said, “I did not ask to bring the students for the programme keeping classes suspended”.
