5 BCL leaders sent to jail in Rajshahi
Five Chhatra League (BCL) leaders of Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) held on charge of assaulting Prof Naushad Ali of the college were sent to jail on Tuesday.
The arrestees are Dr Sampad Kumar Dutta, president of Chhatra League Rajshahi Medical College unit, Dr Shah Alam Siddique Lalon, former BCL general secretary and president of Intern Doctors' Association of RMC and BCL leaders Sandwip, Aloy and Nahid.
Rajpara police said Prof Naushad Ali filed a case against nine BCL leaders on charge of manhandling him on Sunday. Police arrested five of them on the same night raiding the dormitories of RMC.
Police on Tuesday morning produced the arrestees to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court and the court sent them to jail after rejecting their bail prayers.
Earlier on Friday, a 51-member committee of BCL unit of the college headed by third-year student Abid of dental unit was formed. Protesting the committee their rival group formed another committee headed by intern doctor Rezaul Karim Rocky the same day.
Later, a clash ensued between the two rival groups over the issue and Prof Naushad was manhandled when he tried to settle the dispute.
The feuding groups at one stage also humiliated the principal of the college and locked his office room.
