Rajshahi medical BCL chief, four others arrested

Police on Monday night arrested five Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men of Rajshahi Medical College unit, including its president, on charge of assaulting Dental College Doctors' Association President Dr Rezaul Karim alias Rocky. Police said pedestrians found Rocky in an unconscious state on a road near the city's Ghoramara intersection at around 8:00pm and took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Following the incident, members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police raided different areas of the city and arrested RMC unit BCL President Sampad Kumar Dutta, Internee Doctors' Council President Shah Alam Siddiqui, BCL activists Sandwip Kumar Moitra, Nahiduzzaman and Nirjhor Mondol. Mahfuzur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner of DB, told that they arrested the five BCL men, from different areas of the city at around 10:00pm. "We will take legal steps against the arrestees after interrogating them," he said. According to police, the BCL men picked up Rocky from RMC Interns' Hostel at around 4:30pm on Monday, took him to a students' mess in the city and beat him unconscious. RMCH sources said internal feud in BCL Dental College unit has surfaced anew over holding a council of the unit. Two factions of the unit are trying to capture the key posts and Rocky is backing the opponents of the arrested BCL men, sources added. BCL activists of RMC unit led by its Secretary Ashikur Rahman stabbed Tanveer Ahmed, a leader of the Dental college unit, on Sunday. Following the incident, the college authorities formed a committee to investigate the incident. After Monday's incident, Additional police have been deployed on Dental College campus to avert any untoward incident.
