Flood situation worsened in Netrakona while it remained unchanged in Sylhet region yesterday. According to our Netrakona correspondent, flood situation further deteriorated yesterday in Durgapur, Kalmakanda and Khaliajuri upazilas as 60 more villages were flooded and about 75 thousand people marooned. Water levels of the rivers Someshwary, Dhanu and Ubdakhali marked further rise. Heavy downpour during the last few days and hill waters from the upstream worsened the flood in the district, local Water development Board (WDB) sources said. Durgapur upazila administration sources said, the floodwater inundated about 20 villages of Gawkandia, Kullagora, Bakoljura and Janzail union and damaged vegetables on several hundred hectares yesterday morning. About seven kilometer of Durgapur to Gawkandia link road has gone under 4-5 feet waters, they said. At least 30 villages of Borkapon, Rongchati, Karnai and Koilati unions in Kalmakanda upazila have been flooded, Kalmakanda upazila administration sources said. Floodwater damaged most seedbeds of Aman crops in the affected areas. The five- kilometer Kalmakanda to Boroiganj bazar road has been fully inundated. On the other hand, 10 new villages were flooded in Khaliajuri upazila Monday night. Floodwater damaged more 50 kutcha houses in Mehandipur, Hathnaia, Boali and Ishobpur villages, upazila administration sources said. The flood-hit people are sufferings for lack of pure drinking water. Neither the district administration nor any NGO has yet come to their rescue. Our Staff Correspondent in Sylhet reports: Flood situation in the region remained unchanged yesterday. Despite less rain some new areas in Balaganj and in Dakshin Surma were inundated during the last 24 hours. Most of the villages in Zakiganj, Beanibazar, Golapganj, Fenchuganj and Jaintapur upazilas of Sylhet flooded two weeks ago are still under water. Suffering of the people in the rural areas mounted with almost 90 per cent rural roads remaining under water for more than a week. Road links of Sylhet district headquarters with Beanibazar, Zakiganj and Balaganj upazilas remained cut off as water still inundates several points of the roads. All the rivers in the region were still flowing above danger mark at all points, official sources informed. Prices of essentials marked steep rise in those upazilas due to the transportation problem, locals said. Around 5.22 lakh people in the district have been badly affected by the flood, said an official yesterday at the district flood control room set up in the Deputy Commissioner's office. Already 71 flood shelters have been opened in Balaganj, Beanibazar, Fenchuganj, Dakshin Surma and in Golapganj upazilas, the official added.
