Desert Of Hope
Tapping Sahara's green power potential

A solar array about the size of one percent the size of the Sahara Desert is good enough to supply the whole world with electric power. Fossil fuels are running out and carbon dioxide is building up. Scientists are worried about what to do for future survival of modern human kind. Engineers in Germany are combining old and new solar technology into what may be the biggest solar energy project ever. They plan to erect solar panels in the Sahara Desert, where there is lots of sunshine. Space more than three million square miles is lying unused where solar panels can be erected. A solar array big enough to supply the whole world with electric power could fit into 35,000 square miles equivalent to one percent of the Sahara. Maybe the coolest thing about the planned project is that power generation from solar panel works around the years uninterrupted and is rarely seen malfunctioning. The project's first goal is to meet 15 percent of Europe's electricity needed by 2050.
