10 hurt as rival Jubo League men clash

At least 10 people were injured, four of them seriously, as two rival groups of Jubo League clashed over control of Begumganj bus terminal in Noakhali yesterday. The seriously injured--Bablu, 30, Jewel, 28, Swapon, 30, and Jahangir, 32--were admitted to Begumganj Upazila Health Complex. Police arrested three Jubo League men-- Sumon, Sujon and Khalil--on the spot with firearms. Police and witnesses said the activists of a Jubo League faction led by Choumuhoni municipal Jubo League General Secretary Jahangir had an altercation with bus worker Shahid who was collecting tolls at the bus terminal for another faction of the party at noon. At one stage, activists belonging to Jahangir faction beat up Shahid, leaving him seriously injured. When the news spread, supporters of both factions came to the bus terminal and attacked each other. Ten Jubo League men from both factions were injured in the clash. Choumohani Jubo Legue leader Jahangir received head injury and is undergoing treatment at Begumganj health complex. The Jubo League men also damaged seven bus counters, one motorcycle, one truck, a passenger bus and several CNG auto rickshaws during the clash. Police dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control at around 1:00pm.
