Ctg mayor finally goes between hawkers, traders

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury yesterday took initiative to settle the dispute between hawkers and traders of two city markets. Business activities at the two markets remained suspended for the fourth day yesterday as Section 144, imposed on Thursday following a violent clash, was in force. Leaders of Reazuddin Bazar Bank Samity and Tamakumandi Lane Banik Samity, led by the leaders of Bangladesh Shop Owners Association Chittagong unit, sat with the Mayor at his Chasma Hill residence at around 3:00pm yesterday. After a three-hour-long meeting, leaders of the traders' associations said the mayor will inform them of his decision after a meeting with the Hawkers' Union leaders. Reazuddin Bazar Banik Samity President Salamat Ali said the mayor assured them of resolving the problem. He will give his decision tomorrow (Monday), he added. Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali)) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) was also present at the meeting. General Secretary of Chattagram Sammilito Hawkers Federation Masud Rana said, “We have been demanding rehabilitation of hawkers for long and we actually don't want to sit on the sidewalks.”
