AL men besiege police station to free leader
A section of Awami League leaders and activists laid siege to Raiganj Police Station yesterday demanding release of upazila AL leader Abdullah Pathan.
Pathan, joint secretary of AL Raiganj upazila unit, was arrested at his house at Dhanghora village in the morning in a case lodged by Abu Bakkar Sheikh, acting secretary of the AL unit.
Police and local Awami League sources said Abu Bakkar filed the case against Pathan on January 27 following a feud over submitting tender schedule for a construction work under Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Hearing the news of Pathan's arrest, a section of AL leaders and activists laid siege to Raiganj Police Station for an hour demanding his release. They later brought out a procession at Dhanghora Bazar and set fire to tyres in local bus terminal area.
RALLY, MEMO TO DC
A rally was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here yesterday to press the demand for rescue of an abducted schoolgirl and arrest of the culprits.
Several hundred people, including teachers, lawyers, politicians, journalists and socio-cultural activists, joined the rally organised by Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) Sirajganj unit.
They later submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner Md. Humayun Kabir demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the persons involved in kidnapping the schoolgirl.
Speakers at the rally blamed the police for their failure to arrest the abductors even after 12 days of abduction of the girl. They threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme from Wednesday if the schoolgirl was not rescued within the next 24 hours.
A gang of criminals, led by Shah Alam, 22, son of Ashraf Ali of Tamai Pashchimpara village in Belkuchi upazila, picked up the clash nine student of Tamai Girls High School from their house at the same village on January 19.
Victim's father lodged a case against Shah Alam with Belkuchi Police Station on January 21.
