BSF kills Bangladeshi, hands over 5 girls

A cattle trader was shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) of India yesterday along Ohidpur frontier in Shibganj upazila. Victim Shyamal Karmakar was son of Noren Karmakar of Bishroshia village. Major Nazrul of 39 Rifles Battalion said when Shyamal was bringing cattle from India at about 5:00am BSF members of Chandnichak border outpost opened fire leaving him dead on the spot. The BSF later took away the body, locals said. BDR sent a letter to their Indian counterparts protesting the killing and demanding immediate return of the body. Meanwhile, BDR jawans held six people from Bhomra border in Sadar upazila of Satkhira yesterday while they were illegally going to India through the border. The arrestees are Protap Hawlader, 35, and Nityanda Halder, 24, of Dakop upazila of Khulna, and Fatema Bibi, 50, and her son Abul Kashem, 25, of Abhoynagar upazila of Jessore, and Khalilur Rahman, 16, and Aminur Rahman, 25, of Sadar upazila of Jessore. On interrogation, the arrestees said they were going to India without passport 'in search of work'. BDR filed a case with local police station in this connection. Another report adds: BSF yesterday handed over five Bangladeshi young girls to BDR through Benapole check post. BDR said, a gang of women traffickers took the girls to India promising them good jobs there two years ago, according to a correspondent. The girls are Rozina Khatun,16, Ruby Akhter,16, Sabina,17, Fatema Khatun,17, and Juthi,17. Indian police recovered them from the traffickers gang at Kolkata Railway station. BDR later handed over the five girls to police and police handed them over to National Women Lawyers' Association coordinator Sadeka Khatun Billu.
