Accused escapes police custody

Police fired three blank shots and arrested 11 people including two drug addicts after an accused escaped from detective branch police custody in Chandpur early yesterday. Police said, DB police arrested three youths along with drugs from Shahtoli Rasta crossing in Baburhat area in Sadar upazila at around 8:30 pm on Saturday. On the way, the arrested youths locked in an altercation with police and at one stage, Monwar, 28, managed to escape. When the other two --Zakir Hossain, 30, and Razzak, 28,--also tried to flee police chased them. As locals raised a hue and cry, neighbours came out of their houses, caught the two youths and started beating them. Finding it difficult to rescue the two youths from the mob, police opened three rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control. At this, locals started throwing brickbats at the police. They also damaged police vehicles injuring two DB policemen. Police later arrested nine people in connection with attack on police and ransacking of their vehicles. The arrestees are: Rubel Khan, 20, Faruk Gazi, 20, Mofizul Islam, 42, Shafiqul Islam, 45, Bachchu Mridha, 50, Anwar Sardar, 25, Mohammad Hafez, 22, Kaikobad Sarker, 22 and Uddak Sarker, 30.
