Guards themselves kill birds in Hakaluki

Poaching of migratory birds continues unabated in Hakaluki Haor (water body) in Kulaura and Baralekha upazilas of Moulvibazar district. A section of callous people are poaching birds in the water body, using poison traps. It is alleged that some village guards appointed under biodiversity preservation project of the department of environment are also involved in bird poaching. Officials of the department of environment recovered about 40 dead migratory birds on Monday last and captured two guards who were engaged in poaching birds in Hakaluki haor. A case was filed with Baralekha Police Station in this regard. Abdul Malek, an official of the haor management project, said they have captured two guards while two others managed to escape. Ashraful Alam, Baralekha upazila livestock officer, said the poachers are killing guest birds by using poison traps that threaten biodiversity. Some of the recovered dead birds have been sent to Dhaka for viscera test to know what type of poison is being used in traps. Md Shah Alam, Baralekha, upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO), said killing of migratory birds by using poison traps is a heinous act. Legal action will be taken against the poachers. Md Mofizul Islam Deputy Commissioner of Moulvibazar, said he has already taken measures to stop bird poaching in the water body and announced reward for those who can capture poachers. District administration in a meeting on Wednesday decided to observe “Moulvibazar Biodiversity Protection Day' on January 27. Colourful procession, children's painting contest, discussion and cultural function will also be held on the occasion.
